Daksha was the son of Brahma. Sathi was the daughter of Daksha. Sathi was brought in to this world with the cause of getting married to Lord Shiva. As Lord Shiva curse Brahma that he would not be worshiped and his fifth head was cut off due to his lie to Lord Shiva. Due to this reason Daksha hates  Lord Shiva and decided not to let Sati and Lord Shiva get married. But however, Lord Shiva And Sati finally got married. This marriage increased Daksha to hate Lord Shiva. Daksha performed yagna with a desire to take revenge on Lord Shiva. Daksha invited all the Divinities except Lord Shiva and his daughter Sati. Sati expressed her desire to Lord Shiva to attend the yagna, Shiva tried his best to discourage Sati from going to yagna. Sati went to yagna, Sati being an uninvited guest, was not given any respect. Daksha insulted Lord Shiva in the yagna and Sati was not able to bear the insult towards her husband by her father, she sacrificed herself.
Enraged at the insult and injury, Shiva cut off Daksha's head and later replaced it with that of a male goat when Prasuthi wife of Daksha devoted Lord Shiva and restored him to life. Lord Siva picked up the Sati's body in grief and performed Tandava. The other Gods requested Vishnu to arbitrate to stop this destruction. Vishnu used the Sudarshana Chakra which cut through the Sati's corpse. The various parts of the body fell at several spots and formed sites which are known as SHAKTI PEETHAS.
